A FRED (Flashing Rear End Device) is used at the end of the very last car of a train to indicate the end of the train with a flashing red light. They are usually battery operated, and attached to the rear buffer beam or end coupler. Can also be used as a strobe light if a white LED is used. A controller for FREDs is now available for model use. |

FRED Controller The FRED can be powered by a voltage 6 to 20 volts, AC or DC. The controller produces a high intensity flash of an LED for use in 'end of train' devices. FRED uses an ultra bright red LED. The FRED is furnished with double sided mounting tape and includes wire leads with a 9V battery clip installed. For other power sources simply cut the battery clip from the wires. The board size is 22mm x 42mm (0.84" x 1.65"), small enough to fit in an HO gauge model. Supplied with 3mm dia red LED as standard. Note: Controller only, no housing.
